Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
